💦🌱Aquaponics: Old Prototypes II
There was also this project, small but still worked very well.
A tiny water pump pushed water to the top, and returned to the glass container below.
3D printing was used to hold and hide the plastic growing container (a cut 1.5L water bottle) for the plant. There was also plenty of room inside the 3D printed structure to house sensors and even an automatic fish feeder.
This worked well with leafy greens like rocket. It wasn't exactly efficient, but proved how small you can make a working aquaponics system.
All the files and additional info is available for the project here on Thingiverse for free download.
I'd suggest using this as a reference rather than try to build it exactly as it is. Something similar is often built by people over their existing fish tanks as a small prototype before moving on to larger systems.

First look at SpaceX’s Starship HLS mockup at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab.
The semicircle represents Starship’s hull, and the smaller circle within represents an airlock that leads astronauts to the lunar surface
It’s incredible to feel the scale of Starship’s pressurized volume which will radically change how we can live on the Moon.
Thanks to smartereveryday for the exclusive footage.

NEW VIDEO: How to Convert a Cheap RC Car to Use Rechargeable Batteries
A quick straight-to-the-point video on how to convert a cheap RC car using regular AA batteries to use rechargeable Li-ion batteries...
Having 2 children who love playing with RC cars, replacing the AA batteries cheap RC cars use results in a mountain of dead batteries.
By using this relatively easy conversion process, you can use the same rechargeable battery for a year or more, charge batteries between racing sessions, for a more efficient, economic, and less wasteful experience.
This same technique can be used for any other electric device using 2-3 AA batteries.

Applied 3D Printing: Long-term Use...
This box was printed out years ago and used to hold crayons for my children. It is heavily used/abused.
I used PLA plastic to 3D print it.
Many other boxes printed at this time broke down, crumbling into dust.
It seems some types of PLA filament break down over time. Others like used with this box do not. There is no way to tell which will and will not.
I have since switched to PETG plastic.
It is more challenging to print with, more difficult to post-process, but I haven't had a single item crumble over time as projects using PLA.
Use PLA for short-term prototyping which you plan to dispose of after using.
Use PETG for long-term projects.

🔧Repurposing old LED strips to add lights to this RC car already converted to use rechargeable batteries.
1. Uses same tools as previous tutorial;
2. Clip off individual LEDs at their contacts and solder wires to them;
3. Wire the LEDs in series to the positive and negative wires from the battery;
4. You can add in a switch to the battery compartment to independently control the LEDs;

Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year...
Almost all our ornaments are 3D designed and 3D printed. It's a fun and effective way to produce custom, meaningful decorations for any holiday or occasion.
Hopefully this new year we'll have more time to put out content including tutorials so more people can learn how to leverage this technology for their own homes and businesses.

🔧3D Printing Troubleshooting...
This print failure was challenging to identify but easy to solve once it was.
The printer would lay down perfect lines until at regular intervals it would under-extrude leaving little to no plastic where it should be printed.
At first it seemed like a software issue, but updating the firmware had no effect.
Instead, it turned out to be a crumbling plastic part of the extruder which rotates and feeds filament to the hot end.
While rotating, it would reach the section that was crumbling, applying insufficient pressure to feed enough filament for proper extrusion.
When it reached the intact part, extrusion resumed perfectly.
Together this produced the pattern as seen in the photo.
The Creality Ender 3 V2 printers on hand are popular with many after market parts available including all metal replacement extruders for the original plastic ones.
Once switched out to the all metal extruders, it was back to printing perfect again...

⚙Applied 3D Design & Printing: Mini PC Cooling Platform
Mini PCs are great for media centers but because of their small form factor they have a hard time staying cool.
This cooling platform uses a 80x80mm PC fan spliced onto a USB connector powered by the mini PC itself.
The fan pulls air in from below and pushes the air out along the bottom of the mini PC significantly reducing its temperature.
We used free, online SketchUp to design the platform then printed it out over half the day on a Creality Ender 3v2 printer out of PETG filament.
3D design and printing allows you to solve unique problems in ways store-bought solutions can't.

🌱Hydroponics Rebuild
Years ago we built and ran for 1-2 years a home hydroponics system growing a good percentage of our vegetables with it.
We are rebuilding it, what you see in the image is what was left over, we'll need to get some additional supplies to set it up properly.
Hydroponics is the growth of plants without soil, using instead a nutrient solution to provide plant growth optimal resources. It saves soil, space, and water and can be done virtually anywhere.
As the project comes together we will do guides on how to set up your own...
