📐🎄DIY Christmas Ornaments
3D design and printing allows you to create completely customized manufactured items.
This can be anything from spare parts, simple solutions, enclosures for projects, toys, tools, and more.
In this case, a Christmas tree topper requested by the kids, a Mario Brothers star.
We used cardboard to determine the approximate dimensions, designed it in SketchUp (free, runs in your browser), and now printing it in PETG plastic filament.

📏3D Printing Big & Small: Saving Your Drawstrings...
It's the cold season here in Thailand and time to wear sweater jackets. To keep the drawstring from disappearing I designed and printed out these simple stoppers in just minutes.
3D printing lets you make incredible things, but its ability to also make very simple things, exactly how you want and in just a few minutes is also powerful.

📐3D Design & 3D Printing: Replacing a missing LCD drawing tablet pen...
▪️LCD drawing tablets are cheap, good for sketching/erasing and sketching again all day as long as you have your pen;
▪️Unable to find one of the pens, I simply designed a new one in SketchUp (free & opens in your Internet browser) and 3D printed it in PETG plastic;
▪️You can see the similarities/differences but it works just as good as the original;
▪️3D printing allows for localized (on your table top) manufacturing of items you would otherwise have to order or go out and buy;
▪️Notice the string attached, just so we don't lose anymore pens;

📐Applied 3D Printing: Solar Panel Corner Guards
▪️Solar panels are cheap and plentiful, however, cheap panels often have jagged aluminum edges;
▪️A quick 3D designed & 3D printed corner guard eliminates the possibility of cuts;
▪️Because you are designing and printing it yourself, it doesn't matter what size the panel is, the perfect guard can be made and fitted the same day;
▪️Applications for 3D printing like this may not be spectacular, but it is an example of how this technology can solve small problems like this everyday...

🎛 3D Printed Physical Control Panel for Home Automation
▪️Home Assistant is a popular open source home automation application, easy to use once set up and with a virtual control panel on any device (smartphone, laptop, desktop);
▪️Sometimes it's good to have physical buttons to manually turn on and off appliances in your home using smart outlets, hence the control panel;
▪️This is a prototype designed with easily removable panels to add and modify and try out different arrangements and add new buttons and switches;
▪️You can spend forever on paper perfecting a design, but sometimes it's better to just print something out, start using it and working out and perfecting things through trial and error;
▪️Once everything is worked out and optimized, a much simpler and cleaner looking panel can be made;

It took a few minutes to design these, a few hours to print (overnight) and just a few minutes to install.

🎛 3D Printed Home Assistant Control Panel Prototype
When designing a 3D printed prototype, flexibility in the design is important. This control panel is made in sections, making it easy to print out different configurations, adding and subtracting buttons, switches and other features as testing continues.
The panel divisions also are used to separate rooms and floors, a new button was added in another room for a smart outlet controlling a fan.

🌱Chicken waste > compost/soil building > container garden > dinner table...
It takes a while to get the soil-building cycle going, but once it starts you have a constant supply of soil to grow fruits and vegetables.
We're using 150L blue HDPE barrels for "hot composting."
Chicken manure, leftover chicken feed, hay, hedge clippings, and kitchen scraps go into the barrel which is rolled daily to mix its contents.
The composting process in the enclosed barrel creates lots of heat, speeding up the composting process.
Once it's full, it's left for a few months (up to 6 months) before the resulting soil is ready for use in the garden. A second barrel is filled and rolled daily in the meantime.
After a year or so you'll always have good soil on hand in one barrel to add to your garden while managing/utilizing organic waste locally in the second barrel.
