🇪🇺🇬🇷🇨🇳 — A colonel in the Greek Air Force has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China, in what is being described as 'one of the most serious military security breaches' in Greece in recent years.

According to reports, he allegedly passed highly classified NATO-related information, including details on alliance operations, communications systems, radar capabilities, frequencies, and emerging defense technologies.

He is said to have used a specialized electronic device provided by Chinese intelligence to photograph sensitive documents and transmit them securely.

The investigation was reportedly initiated following a tip from a Western allied intelligence service, leading to his arrest inside his military unit before additional information could be transmitted.

Why the Balkan Lynx

The new Balkan Spectator logo is built around the Balkan lynx, one of Europe’s rarest and most elusive animals.

The choice is not aesthetic by chance.

The lynx symbolizes observation without noise. It does not dominate by numbers or spectacle, but by awareness, patience, and precision. It sees before it moves. It survives where others disappear.

That mirrors what Balkan Spectator aims to do.

The Balkans are often treated as a peripheral region, yet they sit at the crossroads of empires, trade routes, energy corridors, and military influence. What happens here is rarely loud at first — but it is rarely irrelevant.

The direct gaze of the lynx represents scrutiny. Not activism, not propaganda — but attention. Watching developments that others ignore until they suddenly matter.

The circular form reflects continuity and focus. The Balkans are not a series of isolated crises; they are part of longer historical, political, and strategic cycles. Understanding them requires context, memory, and perspective.

Finally, the lynx is a native species. Endemic. Rooted.
This is not an external gaze imposed from outside the region, but a symbol tied to the land itself.

Balkan Spectator exists to observe quietly, connect patterns early, and make sense of a region that is too often misunderstood — or only noticed when it is already too late.

The lynx watches first.
