It has been two months since the “Games of War” International Hybrid Conference of 24.02.2024 and have many overwhelming results we would like to sum up the event and its statistics.
It was a biggest challenge to organize International Academic event within less than three months and during Christmas and New Year celebrations. Greatest thanks to Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics for becoming coorganizers of the event. Unexpected positive resonance was that when I announced through my professional connections about upcoming International Academic “Games of War” Conference dedicated to the Ukrainian developed games about Russian invasion of 2022. Also even before starting the Conference have got Honorary Patronage from the President of Gdansk, Consulate of Ukraine, Voevoda of Voevodship (head of the region) and of the Rector of University of Gdansk.
University of Gdansk had 59 people participating in the conference (+organizers). Around 9 games have been showcased. Participants represented 22 countries (most registered online participants were from UK): Poland, Ukraine, Austria, United States of America, Japan, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Canada, Finland, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, China, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Brazil, Moldova, Izrael, Georgia, Australia.
Among participants were representatives of 23 Universities from all over the world (and 12 other companies/organizations): Kazimierz Wielki University, Koło Naukowe Twórców Gier GameDec; Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics; Uniwersytet Gdański; South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K.D.USHYNSKY; University of Luxembourg; University of the Arts London; Charles University; Uniwersytet Dolnośląski; UAL; Klagenfurt University; Sacred Heart University; University of Cincinnati; Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; De Paul University; University of Klagenfurt; Brunel University London; Kobe Design University; Klagenfurt University; Universität Regensburg; Tallinn University; MANS; Art Center College of Design; Otis College of Art and Design.
Among speakers were such high level figures as The President of European Game Developers Federation Hendrik Lesser; Legendary game developer from USA (author of such games as Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Bloodlines), Professor of Art Center College of Design and Otis College of Art and Design, David Mullich; Former CEO of International Game Developers Association and Global Game Jam, one of the 10 most influential women in the Game Development Industry according to Fortune magazine, GEO of Geogrify and SetJetters, Kate Edwards; many other notable academics and game developers. Full program you can find here.
Special thanks to Vitaliy Zubkou, Michał Gembicki and Mateusz Witczak for making this Conference a truly unique and memorable experience.
The conference served as a place of meeting of Historical Game Scholars and Game Development Industry representatives, to exchange expertise and cooperate in the future. I has been met with such inspiration that there is possibility for “Games of War” to become regular annual event (yet with better organization).
Check out David Mullich review of the conference.
