In Vero6 cells experiments it was revealed that Omicron apparently isn't cleaved into S1 & S2 through the Furin Cleavage Site (FCS). Gel signal in a western blot was literally empty at S2. This is very remarkable because the infamous FCS "RRAR" motif is still present in the genome.

"In sharp contrast, Omicron is less fusogenic and its spike is faintly cleaved. Our data suggest that the efficacy of spike protein cleavage, fusogenicity and pathogenicity are well correlated each other."
Another recent paper suggests the same from a different angle, the hypothesis here: hACE2 mice serial passaging could have been the origin of Omicron. During the serial passaging the FCS was mutated so heavily that it is not functional anymore.
