Suzie
A journalist from America
🇺🇸

It all started with Suzie excelling in Spanish during school. When applying to university, she realized she was ready for a big challenge — learning a language that did not use the Latin alphabet. She also had a long-standing fascination with "communist languages" and with people who, in her American childhood, seemed completely different from Americans 🤔

As Suzie jokes:
In university, Chinese classes were at 9am while Russian was at 11am — so I chose Russian! 😄

After completing her bachelor's degree, Suzie moved abroad through the American Peace Corps program. She first taught English at schools near Kyiv and in Odesa region. Then she spent several months living in Samara Oblast, followed by a year working in Moscow 🪆🪆🪆

She confesses:
I absolutely love how in Russian you can say 'Книга на столе' (The book is on the table 📚), or 'На столе книга' (There is a book is on the table,) or 'Книга лежит на столе' (A book lies on the table) — it's so poetic. We don't have that kind of flexibility in English 😊

Although there are plenty of challenges too. Suzie recalls how Professor instructed her:
🤣 And for the perfect Russian ‘ы’—imagine you’ve just been kicked in the gut.

👌 During her studies, Suzie mastered plenty of life-hacks:
When you're exhausted and your entire vocabulary fails you, just slap ‘-овать’ onto any English verb and pray to the gods of cross-cultural communication.

Suzie loves Akhmatova, Mayakovsky, and songs by the group "Kino." Though she admits Russian classics remain challenging:
Recently I tried reading Crime and Punishment — I understood that Raskolnikov has trouble paying rent and feels anxious. That's about it. Poetry is easier — it's fun to translate. But my life goal is to finish at least one great Russian novel in the original 🎯

🔠Miranda, United Kingdom 🇬🇧

Miranda, a student from London, came to Moscow to study Russian at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). Unlike most modern films and TV series, she prefers classic Soviet-era children’s fairy tales 🧚‍♀️

Miranda shares:

🪿 I found some great YouTube channels with Russian fairy tales like 'The Swan Geese,' 'The Little Humpbacked Horse,' and 'Twelve Months.' They come with both English and Russian subnoscripts, so I can always double-check if I don’t understand something.

Honestly, I’ve noticed that older films are easier to follow because the actors speak much slower 🗣

Still, even children’s vocabulary can be tricky. She recalls:

I once spent ages looking up what 'сонные тетери' (sleepy blackcocks) meant. I found out 'тетерев' is a bird, but I still don’t get how it relates to sleep. Then there are phrases like "ливмя льет" (literally 'rainily rains') or "криком кричит" ('shouting with their scream') — they really throw me off. My teacher explained they’re used for emphasis, but a literal translation sounds like nonsense! 🤯🤯🤯

🔠 William, United States 🇺🇸

Many foreigners prefer exploring Russian language and culture through literature. William, a recent medical school graduate from the U.S., credits his fluency and rich vocabulary entirely to the classics 🪶

📖 I started learning Russian in my freshman year. Mostly, I read classics — my Russian girlfriend gave me my first book in high school: 'Crime and Punishment' by Dostoevsky.

🤓I remember even reading it in English took forever, but it left such a strong impression that I asked her to send more. That’s how I ended up reading 'The Brothers Karamazov' and 'Demons.' Then she decided I was ready for the 'heavy artillery' and handed me 'War and Peace,' but I couldn’t get through it.

He adds:

Once I began learning Russian, I fell in love with Chekhov’s short stories — they’re easy to read, concise, and written in simple language. I also adored Bulgakov. 'The Master and Margarita' is fascinating not just for its plot but for phrases that often stump foreigners. Still, I love surprising Russians by casually dropping quotes like 'They were corrupted by the housing problem' or 'second-fresh sturgeon' 😁
