Square Enix Keen On Shifting Focus To NFTs And The Metaverse
The letter started with the Metaverse and how it had become one of the biggest topics of 2021, with immense potential in the opportunities it brings to the table. He pointed to Facebook changing its name to Meta and how this is evidence that the “Metaverse” isn’t just a buzzword but is here to stay. He also dubbed 2021 as the “Metaverse: Year One” and “NFTs: Year One,” highlighting the interest that both generated in 2021. We have already seen significant developments in this area, with Blue Monster Games acquiring Citadel Studios, bringing the former to the Metaverse. Another major development is PwC Hong Kong acquiring land in the Sandbox metaverse.
Matsuda believes that the Metaverse will transition into a business phase sometime in 2022 and will see an influx of services that will make an appearance. This will be made possible thanks to technological advances in XR and the growing prevalence of 5G, Cloud technology, and blockchain technology.
“As this abstract concept begins to take concrete shape in the form of product and service offerings, I am hoping that it will bring about changes that have a more substantial impact on our business as well.”
Matsuda wrote that NFTs were greeted with significant enthusiasm in 2021 but also noted that there were instances where NFTs featured in “overheated trading” with some amount of speculation involved. However, he stated that he believes that this would correct itself over time. He wrote in the letter, elaborating on his point, stating,
“This, obviously, is not an ideal situation, but I expect to see an eventual right-sizing in digital goods deals as they become more commonplace among the general public, with the value of each available content corrected to their true estimated worth, and I look for them to become as familiar as dealings in physical goods.”
Matsuda stated that Square Enix had identified Artificial Intelligence, the Cloud, and blockchain games as new spheres where the company will be focusing its investments, with the company already beginning its R&D in these areas. With AI, Square Enix will focus on simulation technology, world models, and language processing. Matsuda explained the meaning behind these efforts, stating,
“These efforts will help us develop the games that we release into the world and enhance their overall quality, but that is not all. By incorporating the output of these R&D efforts into virtual avatars and elsewhere, we plan to apply that output to a wide variety of content and provide the relevant technology to other companies, with a view to leveraging these R&D efforts across our entire Digital Entertainment business.”
Regarding cloud technology, Square Enix will leverage Cloud technology to help in the distribution of content. It will also utilize it in developing content to offer consumers new forms of entertainment powered by the cloud and its attributes. He also talked about blockchain games, describing them to be different than the current traditional games, which he described as having a unidirectional flow where creators provide a game and consumers play them.
About blockchain games, Matsuda wrote,
“By contrast, blockchain games, which have emerged from their infancy and are at this very moment entering a growth phase, are built upon the premise of a token economy and therefore hold the potential to enable self-sustaining game growth. Advances in token economies will likely add further momentum to this trend of diversification. I see the “play to earn” concept that has people so excited as a prime example of this.”

The Australian Open has always been at the forefront when it comes to trying out new innovations. In 2020, the Australian Open held an esports event called the Fortnite Summer Smash, with a prize pool of $100,000.
This year, the Australian Open will be releasing a collection of 6,776 NFTs corresponding to minuscule plots on the tournament court’s surface. The tournament will also be hosting a virtual event for the Australian Open on Decentraland.
Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley commented,
“With this next wave of technology, global tennis fans will have the opportunity to be part of the 2022 Australian Open in a way never before available. The AO has always been seen as one of the most innovative sporting events in the world, and this project is just another example of our team pushing the boundaries to provide our fans with better access and engagement with the AO.”
Each winning shot from every match of the tournament will correspond to an NFT included in the collection. NFT owners of each NFT will receive an airdrop that will include the footage of the winning point, Official merchandise, and virtual wearables, according to a statement released by officials.
When a championship point lands on a plot, the owner of that particular plot will receive the ball used for the championship point in a specially handcrafted case. Talking about the allocation of the court plot, the director of Run It Wild, Adam De Laca, stated,
“The court plot tied to the NFT will be randomly allocated and revealed when they are minted, meaning a buyer can’t choose a specific position on-court.”
The project also features 169 NFTs noscriptd the Australian Open Artists Series. This collection features art from both international and local artists.

Hong Kong Monetary Authority Releases Discussion Paper On Crypto-Assets And Stablecoins
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority today released its January 2022 Discussion Paper on Crypto-assets and Stablecoins. While acknowledging the potential benefits that these innovations bring, especially stablecoins, the authority is keen to see the application of appropriate regulation.
When treating crypto-assets in general, the Discussion Paper highlights that going forward there are dangers, and warns of a:
“growing interconnectedness between these largely unregulated crypto-assets with the mainstream financial system and the potential risks that a severe price correction in these assets could pose to the wider financial system.”
On stablecoins, there appears to be more of a predisposition to acceptance, and the Paper notes that there is the possibility that they may become more widely used as they gain traction.
“some stablecoins may be more readily developing into a commonly acceptable means to store value and/or make payments, thus having a higher potential for being incorporated into the mainstream financial system across the globe.”
Although it is also noted that payment-related stablecoins would first have to be appropriately regulated before being allowed to operate in Hong Kong or be marketed to the public.
The report notes the upward trend in the global market cap for crypto-assets, especially since the onset of the pandemic.
While it is believed that crypto-assets have a “limited share in global financial assets and adoption by the general public of Hong Kong, they are evolving rapidly."
The Paper goes on to discuss the possible regulatory measures that might be adopted, ranging from a market driven “no action”, through various other policy options that include more and tougher regulation, until the final option, which is a “blanket ban”.
Major international organisations are referenced, such as the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the FATF, and the FSB, and the report briefly highlights what they are currently advising.
In addition, the Paper covers how the major global jurisdictions are dealing with the issue of crypto-assets. China, the EU, Singapore, the UK, and the US have their positions laid out.
After covering the risks entailed by stablecoins, the Paper concludes that crypto-assets haven’t yet posed material risks to financial stability, but noted that given the pace of their development, risks could soon begin to materialise.
The authors of the Paper concluded:
“bringing crypto-assets within the regulatory perimeter in an appropriate manner would help address the various risks posed to users and the financial system while embracing the potential benefit of financial innovations.”
Adding:
“The HKMA is of the view that adopting a risk-based approach would be the most suitable way to take things forward.”
