Have you ever seen a tadpole shrimp? Members of the genus Triops, these small crustaceans can be found across a wide range that includes North America, South America, and Asia. Growing up to 1.5 in (4 cm) long, they inhabit the bottom of murky freshwater pools. These critters have three eyes—including two compound ones and a primitive light-sensing organ—as well as a long antennae that they use to find food in their muddy habitats. Their lifespan is only about 40 days.
