This is truly a great time to be Catholic, as Father Mike Schmitz has said. The darker it gets, the more the candle is visible to people. Get your RCIA programs in shape, people are seeking truth. You have no idea how many modern saints are in the making.

PAUL VI AND THE EAST
---
The Churches of the East and the Church of the West (Catholic) had many issues for many years. But in 1054, the rift reached its peak. Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Michael Keroularios excommunicated each other’s Churches. This is known as the “Great Schism” which lasted 900 years. Only in 1964 was the mutual excommunication lifted by Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I when the two met in Jerusalem. We hope and pray that one day, all Christians would be united.

MAY 29: WE ARE HER CHILDREN
Mary, Mother of the Church
---
The Memorial of Mary, the Mother of the Church, was inscribed in the General Roman Calendar by Pope Francis in 2018, and is celebrated every Monday after Pentecost. However, Mary has been referred to as the Mother of the Church since the 4th century. St. John Paul II wrote, “In her new motherhood in the Spirit, Mary embraces each and every one in the Church, and embraces each and every one through the Church.”

MAY 30: THE PARENTS OF SAINTS
Saint Basileios and Saint Emmelia
Married Laypersons
Died: 379 and 375
---
St. Basil and St. Emmelia were the parents of St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Macrina the Younger, St. Peter of Sebaste, and St. Basil the Great (that is why today’s Basil is called Basil the Elder). Two more children of theirs, Naucratius and Theosebia, are recognized as saints in other Christian calendars. They were expelled from their land at the time of Emperor Galerius Maximian and lived in the desert. After the persecution, they lived in peace.

MAY 30: THE MAID OF ORLEANS
Saint Jeanne d’Arc
Lay Virgin
Died: 1431
---
Saint Joan of Arc, known as the “Maid of Orleans,” was a French teenage girl who had visions which later brought her to lead a military campaign against England. She was victorious in her mission. Later, she was captured and placed under trial for witchcraft. The Inquisition sentenced her to be burned at the stake, becoming the first saint to die in the very hands of the Church. Even before her canonization, she had been exonerated.

MAY 31: THE FIRST PRIEST IN KOREA
Blessed Zhou Wenmo Iacobus
Priest and Martyr
Died: 1801
---
He was a Chinese priest and martyr. His name in English is James. He was the first Catholic priest to enter Korea, where Christianity was already growing. He studied the Korean language first before celebrating the first Mass in Korea. He ministered to the Catholics in secret. When the persecution against Catholics in Korea started, he surrendered himself. He was severely tortured, but he remained calm. He was beheaded for his faith.
