He was a Gallic bishop. He was the son of St. Isychius (who was a bishop) and the brother of St. Apollinaris of Valence. He succeeded his father in the bishopric. He fought Arianism, ransomed captives, and supported papal authority as the mainstay of religious unity. He wrote a long and elegant narrative poem describing original sin, expulsion from paradise, the Flood, and crossing of the Red Sea.

She was an Italian married layperson and Trinitarian tertiary. Her husband maltreated her and had an affair with another woman. She prayed for his conversion. He converted and became a Franciscan priest 9 years after her death. She did charitable works despite the fact that they were reduced to poverty because of her husband. She was also a mystic. She had visions, mostly about what would happen in the end of times.

One of the most blasphemous and anti-Christian TV shows ever made.

St. Paul Miki, Japanese martyr and eloquent seminarian (1564–1597)

Born into an affluent family near Osaka, Paul Miki joined the Jesuits in 1580 and became known for his articulate preaching. Miki was only months from being ordained when he was arrested and crucified with 25 other Catholics during a period of Christian persecution in Japan. He renewed his vows on the morning of his crucifixion and preached his final sermon from the cross.

St. Mél of Ardagh

A nephew of St. Patrick, he and his brothers accompanied their uncle Patrick to Ireland and helped him with his missionary work there. Mél was reportedly consecrated bishop by Patrick himself. After Patrick built the church at Ardagh, he appointed Mél as Bishop of Ardagh. According to the Life of St. Brigid, Mél is said to have had no fixed see for most of his life in ministry, which fits with other accounts of his being a travelling missionary and evangelist. Acting upon the apostolic precept, Mél supported himself by working with his hands; what he gained beyond bare necessities, he gave to the poor.

Mél also built the monastery of Ardagh where he was both bishop and abbot, and is said to have had the gift of prophecy. He accepted Brigid of Kildare's profession as a nun, and served as her mentor while she was in Ardagh.

FEBRUARY 6: CRUCIFIED AND TRANSFIXED WITH SPEARS

This group of 26 all-male martyrs were the first victims of the anti-Christian persecution in Japan. They were crucified and transfixed with spears on the same day. Twenty of them were Japanese, 4 were Spanish, 1 was Indian, and 1 was Mexican. Three were Franciscan priests, 3 were Franciscan brothers, 3 were Jesuit brothers, and 17 were lay Franciscan tertiaries, 3 of whom were just children.

Today is the death anniversary of the Ven. Marthe-Louise Robin. She was a French layperson, Franciscan tertiary, and founder of the Foyers of Charity. She was bedridden for 57 years. Her life was marked with many mystical phenomena. She had visions. She had the gift of inedia. She ate nothing but the Holy Eucharist for 50 years. She also had the stigmata. Today is the memorial of the 26 Martyrs of Nagasaki, also known as the Protomartyrs of Japan. In the group are the first Japanese saints “led” by St. Paulus Miki.
