The Battle of Lepanto – 7 October 1571
The Battle of Lepanto was a naval engagement that took place when a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of Catholic states arranged by Pope St. Pius V, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet of the Ottoman Empire in the Gulf of Patras. The navel engagement marked a decisive victory for Christendom, pushing back the Ottoman Empire from expanding into the Mediterranean and halted their advance into Italian controlled territories and any possibility of besieging Rome itself. Amidst overwhelming odds and rowing against the winds, Our Lady interceded and the winds turned in the favour of the Holy League and so the battle was won.
The victory was credited to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose intercession with God they had implored through the recitation of the Rosary. Pope St. Pius V had requested the faithful to pray the Rosary unceasingly for triumph in this decisive battle. Churches were kept open and the soldiers fasted and prayed the Rosary before the fight.

Pope St. Pius V declared October 7 as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, and made the day an obligatory Memorial on the Church’s calendar. The name was later changed to the feast to - Our Lady of the Rosary.

A Batalha de Lepanto foi um conflito naval que tomou lugar quando uma frota da Santa Liga, uma coalizão de estados Católicos criada pelo Papa São Pio V, conseguiu grande vitória contra a frota do Império Otomano no Golfo de Patras. A Batalha naval marcou um grande vitória decisiva para a Cristandade, empurrando o Império Otomano de volta em sua expansão pelo Mediterraneo e parando o seu avanço sobre territórios sob controle da Itália, além da possibilidade de um cerco à própria Roma. Lutando em chances extremamente desfavoráveis e remando contra o vento, Nossa Senhoras intercedeu e os ventos viraram em favor da Santa Liga, e então a batalha foi vencida.
A vitória foi creditada à Santíssima Virgem Maria, cuja intercessão com Deus eles haviam implorado através da récita do Santo Rosário. O Papa São Pio V havia pedido que os fiéis rezassem o Rosário sem cessar pelo triunfo nessa batalha decisiva. Igrejas foram mantidas abertas e os soldados jejuaram e rezaram o Rosário antes da luta.
