The First Computer Virus 🦠

The first computer virus, known as the "Creeper virus," was created in the early 1970s by Bob Thomas, an engineer working at BBN Technologies. Unlike modern viruses that often have malicious intent, Creeper was more of an experiment to test how a self-replicating program could move across a network.

Creeper infected the ARPANET (the precursor to the modern internet) and was designed to move from one computer to another. When it infected a system, it would display the message: "I'M THE CREEPER: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN."

Interestingly, the Creeper virus also led to the creation of the first antivirus software. Ray Tomlinson, the same engineer who invented email, wrote a program called "Reaper," which was designed to find and delete the Creeper virus from infected machines.

This early cat-and-mouse game between viruses and antivirus programs set the stage for the ongoing cybersecurity battles that continue to this day.

The First Webcam Was Invented to Check Coffee Levels Without Getting Up 🤣

In 1991, researchers at the University of Cambridge set up a camera to watch the coffee pot in their computer lab, known as the Trojan Room. The camera was connected to the internal network and allowed them to check the status of the coffee pot without leaving their desks. This simple yet practical use of technology is considered one of the earliest examples of a webcam.

The camera operated for a decade, becoming a quirky and iconic piece of internet history before it was finally switched off in 2001. This early innovation highlights how necessity and a bit of creativity can lead to technological advancements that become commonplace today.
