علاوه بر کنجکاوی و تخیل روش موثر دیگری برای مقابله با تعصب ممکن است شوخ طبعی و به خصوص توانایی شوخی کردن با خودمان باشد. من هرگز متعصبی را ندیده ام که حس شوخ طبعی داشته باشد. از طرفی هرگز شخصی را ندیده ام که توانایی شوخی کردن به ضرر خودش را داشته باشد و در عین حال متعصب باشد. طنز باعث می شود که شخص، حداقل به صورت موقت، موضوعات قدیمی را به صورت جدیدتری ببیند. یا خودش را برای لحظه ای به صورتی که دیگران به او نگاه میکند ببیند. این تغییر به ما کمک میکند که باد اضافی غرور و برتری به خصوص خود برتر بینی را خالی کنیم. علاوه بر آن طنز معمولا نشانی از نسبی گرایی و پایین آوردن ایده آل هاست.
