In a job interview, if they ask “If you will get a better job opportunity, will you leave this job?”, what should be the answer?
This is a classic interview question that most interviewers on the panels I used to be on liked to ask 90% of the time.
To tell you the truth, I didn’t really fancy this as a make-or-break question. Most of the time the interviewer doesn’t know the correct answer to this question. They are implicitly trying to establish from the get-go whether you are a suck-up or a realist.
Depending on the type of panel that’s in front of you and the general size of the company hiring you, either answer could be correct or wrong. It is what you say right after your yes or no that will definitely give them what they’re looking for.
So my advice is to hit them with the quick uno reverse card and ask them why they think that there could be a potential bigger or better employer than the one you are interviewing for. Subtly, hint at them that the money isn’t the most important element in your docket and that you prefer growth and productivity because the opposite would mean stagnation, getting comfortable, and possibly even being absent-minded in the workplace.
Once, an interviewee deliberately misinterpreted the question and answered, “Yes, I will take the promotion should it be offered to me in the future in this company.” That was very clever and the entire panel smirked and moved on.
My point is, you shouldn’t overthink it or even give answers that the panel needs to hear. Doing the latter might land you the job, but you might end up being frustrated and underappreciated in the company and that almost never ends well.
The fact that you got to the interview stage means that they know that you’re already qualified for the job. So be true to yourself and give responses that resonate with you.

Here are 5 very common job interview questions:
Why are you interested in this job?
Tell me about a project you’ve managed in the past.
Tell me about a time in the past that you’ve failed, or made a mistake. What did you learn?
What are your best skills / greatest strengths?
What are your areas for growth / biggest weaknesses?
How can you answer these questions in ways that communicate to the employer you are excited about and qualified for the job they need done? That you will make their life easier?
For guidance on how to answer these common interview questions, read this short article https://files.cdn.thinkific.com/file_uploads/359511/attachments/652/875/cb2/NYT_-_How_to_Answer_Common_Difficult_Interview_Questions_-_The_New_York_Times.pdf. by the New York Times.
