Johnson forced to delay House vote on controversial surveillance tool after GOP mutiny threats

The Rules panel, which had to approve the bill before it hit the House floor, abruptly called off the rest of its session with no explanation.

One claim is that progress on the FISA bill would be postponed until a later date because members of the House Intelligence Committee threatened to tank a procedural vote to effectively kill the legislation.

Others said the bill text was changed over the weekend without their consent or the consent of the House Judiciary Committee, which also worked on the bill.

Watchdog report paints picture of Bureau of Prisons in crisis

A damning report from the DOJ Inspector General. covering the years 2014-2021, finds that "recurring policy violations and operational failures contributed to inmate suicides" in federal prisons. 

344 deaths were reviewed and found just over half were death by suicide.

The 344 deaths identified fell into one of four categories:
1-Suicide
2-Homicide
3-Accident
4-Unknown factors.

The report found "a combination of recurring policy violations and operational failures [within BOP] contributed to inmate suicides."

Some findings include:

✔️BOP’s staff response to emergencies, "was often insufficient due to lack of clear communication, urgency, or proper equipment."
✔️ Many of the deaths are attributable to drugs
✔️ In many instances cell searches are failing (Horowitz)
✔️Inmates are receiving illicit drugs through a variety of manners (including drones)

The text of the bill prohibits “acting as part of or on behalf of a private paramilitary organization and armed with a firearm, explosive or incendiary device, or other dangerous weapon.”

It has been suggested that the bill “would make it illegal to ‘publicly patrol, drill, or engage in techniques capable of causing bodily injury or death.’”

US Census To Ask Questions On Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation For First Time

If approved, the bureau plans to include them in its annual American Community Survey and will ask respondents

✔️About their sex assigned at birth
✔️Their sexual orientation.

📝Census workers are not required to ask respondents whether or not they are U.S. citizens… But… GOP senators introduced a legislation ennoscriptd ‘EqualRepresentationAct’ in January. If passed, it would mandate the citizenship question be asked seeking to ensure that non-citizens are not being counted in the census as this affects congressional and electoral apportionments.
