There was a guy, a photographer, called Kenneth Adelman. This guy was part of the California Coastal Records Project, he was tasked with taking photos of all the California coastline, excepting some government restricted areas.
In one of those pictures, a mansion appeared, he didn't give it much thought, for his project was about the coastline.
As with all of the photos taken by him, they were published on his server, as a photographic conservation of the coastline on that moment.
Due to the randomness of life, Barbra Streisand found out about the project, and lo and behold, there were pictures of her Malibu mansion on the site.
She, of course, sued the guy and the site hosting the server for violation of privacy for 50 million dollars.
The picture was number 3850 out of 13000 coastline pictures.
Before the lawsuit, the picture had been downloaded 6 times, one by Kenneth, one by the server admin, two by some random guys and two by Streisand's attorneys.
Due to the strange nature of the case, it quickly went public and the masses acknowledged the pictures, yes, before the lawsuit, the picture was downloaded 6 times, after the lawsuit, it had gone to 420K downloads, effectively making it impossible to erase.
Due to the fact that the picture was now public and massively distributed, the lawsuit was dismissed and Streisand had to pay for Kenneth's lawyer fees.
On 2005, a website called Urinal.net had grown to host hundreds of pictures of urinals as part of an art exposition, mentioning the name and location of each urinal.
A holiday resort sued said website for using its name without due authorization, and, of course, said urinal picture went viral.
Thus, the term Streisand Effect was coined, as to how an attempt to delete or suppress info online, only exacerbates said info's public knowledge.
