Arraweelo (or Arawelo) was a legendary queen from Somalia, whose story can be used to show how folklore can be manipulated to the taste of multiple political agendas.

Arraweelo can be seen as a woman who fought against the male-dominated society she lived in. She is said to have gained power after encouraging the women of the region to go on strike for three days; the men were therefore so busy with carrying out the women's work that Arraweelo was able to usurp the throne.
She is held to be something of a proto-feminist leader, who helped the women of Somalia attempt to break out of the miserable situation they were in.

If you were a man, you might grow up hearing a different story; Arraweelo usurped the throne and attempted to form a female-dominated society. She is most famously known for allegedly castrating the men of her realm. She is also said to have encouraged women to commit adultery and refuse orders from men.

It is possible that the story of castration originates from the Queen imprisoning clan leaders who refused to agree to her peace demands, and rumours spreading of why the clan leaders had not returned.

Generally, it seems that the image of Arraweelo has been manipulated as a cautionary tale of why women should know their place - and what happens when they gain power. Even today in Somali society, an overbearing wife may be labelled an "arraweelo."

Regardless, the reaction to her is shown by a mound in Somalia which has come to be known as her grave. When passing by the grave, men will spit, throw stones and swear at it. Women, meanwhile, are known to pay their respects by breaking a twig off a tree and leaving it on the grave.
