Pan being dead might have been a misunderstanding. Overly Sarcastic Productions explains that in the video about Hermes.
Basically what happens is that a guy named Thamus sails by a shore and hears someone yell "Thamus Panmegas tethneke" which he interprets as "Thamus, the great god Pan is dead" which he then tells everyone. But the sentence can also mean "Thamus the All-great is dead" and there is a cult worshipping a guy named Thamus who is indeed dead. So he might have just heard that cult talking about that Thamus instead of telling the other Thamus that Pan has died. Greek is funky
