@Shivak03 @tforrest889: Nothing is for certain when looking at the future but if a decision to unilaterally deploy to Ukraine is made, the Russians would in my view try to get that decision reversed somehow.
That would mean increasing the pressure along several tracks. The nuclear track is one of these. They probably know that their normal nuclear rhetoric isn't effective, so if they choose to, the rhetoric must be backed by something more concrete; nuclear exercises, some degree of alert changes, etc etc.

@Shivak03 @tforrest889: Nuclear crisis isn't inevitable but we are talking about Russia and something very much against their objectives for this whole affair.
I just want the uncomfortable parts to be taken into the discussions, so if we do end up in a crisis, nuclear or the Russians targeting any forces deployed to Ukraine and causing mass casualties, or something else dramatic, no one can come saying "we never thought this could happen".

"Thousands of drones, like the Orca"
Orca is close to half a billion dollars. Thousands of Orcas would consume the entire DoD budget.

The Navy needs a 180-degree pivot: Embracing autonomy and AI for maritime dominance
The Navy should drop manned aircraft and pivot the majority of surface vessels to drones, argues John Ferrari of AEI.
