The above image shows the google trends of Pepe the Frog, and Dat Boi. The actual statistics may vary, because people also google people named Pepe As you can see, Pepe was used a little bit throughout the time that this was graphed (Feb. 2012-Feb. 2017). And if you can spot it, so was Dat Boi. Now, in about February of 2015, Pepe rose a little, and started being searched more. This could be attributed to normies, but it could also be a growing interest in him. Some investors saw this trend, and bought into it, but relative to the future, it was nothing substantial.
Fast forward to May, 2016, and Dat Boi soars through the roof, besting Pepe for what would almost be four months.
Matt Furie, creator of Pepe the Frog, explained in a June 2016 interview with Comic Book Resources that he was "devastated" to find out that Dat Boi had "begun to overshadow internet Pepe.”
