The term "nuclear option" in Congress does not refer to the use of nuclear weapons but rather to a procedural maneuver in the U.S. Senate that allows a simple majority to override a standing rule, such as the 60-vote threshold to end debate (cloture) on most legislation or nominations. This procedural tool can be used regardless of whether the United States is at war or not, as it pertains to internal Senate rules and not military or wartime powers.
The nuclear option was notably invoked in 2013 to lower the cloture threshold for most presidential nominations to a simple majority, and again in 2017 to extend this change to Supreme Court nominations. It relies on a parliamentary procedure where a point of order is raised, appealed, and then overturned by a majority vote, thereby establishing a new precedent.

🇮🇱 ISRAEL’S TOP MILITARY LAWYER JAILED AFTER LEAKING VIDEO OF DETAINEE ABUSE
Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi was once Israel’s highest-ranking military lawyer.
Now she’s behind bars after admitting she leaked a video showing Israeli soldiers allegedly sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military prison.
The footage triggered a political firestorm. Instead of focusing on the abuse, right-wing leaders slammed her for exposing it.
She resigned, vanished for hours, left a cryptic note, and was later found alive on a Tel Aviv beach. Then came the arrest.
She’s accused of fraud, breach of trust, obstruction, and leaking classified info. Her phone’s still missing, and critics claim she staged her disappearance to destroy evidence.
The detainee was released back to Gaza as part of a hostage deal. The soldiers? Still awaiting trial.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s allies are using the scandal to double down on attacking Israel’s legal system.
One official called it “the worst PR disaster in Israel’s history.”
Justice is on trial. So is everyone involved.
