Christmas Day. NATO fighter pilots scrambled. Tu-95MS strategic bombers- Cold War-era aircraft that can carry nuclear cruise missiles- flew over the Norwegian Sea toward northern UK airspace.

Not close enough to violate it. Just close enough to force a response.

That is the entire operation. Make British and Norwegian pilots spend Christmas intercepting Russian bombers that were never going to cross the line.

Force NATO to burn fuel, log flight hours, pull personnel from holiday leave, and prove they are watching.

Tu-95MS "Bear" bombers are 70 years old. Turboprop engines. Loud as hell. Easily trackable. Russia is not trying to surprise anyone. They are announcing "we are here" and making NATO react.

This happens constantly. Russian aircraft probe NATO airspace dozens of times per year. It only makes headlines when the timing is provocative enough- Christmas, New Year's, during summits, after sanctions.

The cost-imposition works both ways, but asymmetrically. Russia spends fuel and pilot hours. NATO spends more- maintaining 24/7 quick reaction alert posture, scrambling jets, tracking everything, coordinating multinational responses.

But the psychological angle is what matters. Putin knows exactly what he is doing sending nuclear-capable bombers on Christmas.

He is not threatening nuclear war. He is reminding Britain:

"Your pilots are working while mine are too, but mine are here because I chose to send them. Yours are here because I made you respond."

It is the aerial version of knocking on someone's door and running away. Except the door is sovereign airspace and the response costs millions.

What happens next: nothing. Bombers turn back. NATO logs it. Next week Russia does it again.

The year after. Forever. Because the whole point is not the destination- it is forcing the response.
