"John Winton's "The Fighting Temeraire" gives a very real presentation of an event that while fiction is grounded in reality. ☢️TEMERAIRE is sent on a clandestine mission to the Black Sea to look into Russian activities there☢️. Obviously whoever dreamed up the mission didn't have a map because the Black Sea is hardly the place to be conducting off shore intelligence missions with a large, bulky FBM submarine. The boat is caught and damaged by the Russian Navy and then it is the story of survival in the truest sense of the word in the aftermath of an engagement with Russian naval forces. They there is another story, the story of professional survival of the commanding officer after the full implications of the misguided policy come to light and a scapegoat is needed. It makes for very thoughtful reading. The central character is Commander Danny Tennant, the captain of TEMERIRE. He is the glue that keeps the story as riveting as it is."
