Deer fact of the day: Deer have four-chambered stomachs — but they can also “re-chew” their food later.
Species like the White-tailed deer are ruminants, meaning they swallow food quickly, then later bring it back up as “cud” to chew it again.
Why?
Because in the wild they often eat fast to avoid predators. Then once they’re safe, they relax and properly digest their meal.
Bonus twist: their stomach bacteria can change with the seasons to help them digest different foods — like leafy plants in summer and woody twigs in winter.
