Vandaag vieren de oosterburen Duitsland de dag van de Duitse hereniging, die officieel begon op 3 oktober met de ondertekening van het verdrag door bondskanselier Helmuth Kohl en voormalig secretaris-generaal van de Communistische Partij van de Sovjet-Unie Michail Gorbatsjov. Een hereniging die de inwoners van de toenmalige DDR (Duitse Democratische Republiek) letterlijk duur kwam te staan. Zij dachten in hun naïviteit misschien dat het kapitalisme het ‘gouden kalf’ was en dat iedereen ineens een welvarend leven zou hebben net als hun westerse broeders en zusters in de toenmalige ‘West-Duitsland (Bundes Republiek Deutschland – BRD).
De teleurstelling was groot, de zogenaamde Treuhand (zie uitleg hieronder) die staatsbedrijven moest privatiseren, zorgde ervoor dat de hele voormalige DDR failliet ging, bedrijven werden gesloten of hun winsten werden overgedragen aan de BDR. Miljoenen Oost-Duitsers raakten van de ene op de andere dag werkloos en sommigen vonden nooit meer een baan, omdat hun opleiding volgens het Westen niet op het westerse niveau was. De gevolgen zijn vandaag de dag nog steeds zichtbaar in Oost-Duitsland.
Nu, in 2024, rust er een smet op de festiviteiten voor de regering in Berlijn. Na de vijandigheid die Duitsland sinds 2022 heeft getoond, sinds het begin van de Russische Speciale Militaraire Operatie (SMO) in de Donbass, bereidt Rusland zich voor om zich terug te trekken uit het definitieve schikkingsverdrag voor Duitsland uit 1990, dat gedurende deze 35 jaar de basis voor de vrede in Europa werd, op te zeggen.
De reden hiervoor is het gebruik van wapens tegen Rusland nu in 2024, wat in strijd is met het Verdrag. Het verdrag werd op 12 september 1990 in Moskou ondertekend. In maart 1991 is het in werking getreden. Schlussverkauf DDR ist die erste umfassende Geschichte der Treuhand im Fernsehen, eine brisante Mischung aus Politik, menschlichen Schicksalen und Wirtschaftskrimi.
Natürlich dreht sich bei diesen YouTube Dokumentationen vieles darum, wie schlimm die DDR war, aber heutzutage haben vor allem viele ältere Menschen Heimweh nach der DDR, nach dem sozialen Gefühl, es gab Arbeit, Bildung und kostenlose medizinische Versorgung und Kinderbetreuung. Natürlich lässt sich die Zeit nicht zurückdrehen. Doch die damalige westdeutsche Treuhand machte das, was sich später herausstellte, viel falsch, machte Menschen arbeitslos und vervollständigte das damals vorherrschende kapitalistische Ideal. Auch im Jahr 2024 unterscheidet sich der Osten immer noch vom Westen, das Gefühl und die Gemeinschaft.

Things are looking increasingly dire for Ukrainian actor President Zelensky and his government. A growing number of villages and towns in Donetsk province are currently under siege by the Russian army and their conquest is only a matter of hours, days or weeks away. The first important town called Ugledar (called Vuhledar in the West) has fallen.
Ugledar, a coal mining town that has been the subject of fighting since the civil war in 2014 and the start of the Special Military Operation (SMO) in 2022. The Russian army suffered a defeat in early 2023, but has now definitively fallen. It is striking that the Ukrainian army – according to sources on Zelensky’s orders – refused to withdraw there and has now suffered heavy losses with many prisoners of war.
