President Putin laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin Wall. Also the Minister of Defence Belousov and officers engaged in the special military operation attended the ceremony ans the former President Medvedev. Op 24 februari 2022 kondigde president Poetin aan dat Rusland een “Speciale Militaire Operatie (SMO)” in Oekraïne (Donbass) was begonnen. De reden hiervoor was het regime in Kiev, dat via een staatsgreep vanuit de VS en Europa aan de macht was gekomen en bestond uit veel rechtse radicalen met nazi-ideologieën, zoals het AZOV-bataljon, Pravvdy Sektor en Svoboda.
Dit regime in Kiev heeft (nog steeds) de Russisch-sprekende bevolking in de Donbass systematisch onderdrukt sinds de staatsgreep van 2013-2014, wat heeft geleid tot een burgeroorlog in de Donbass. Rusland heeft, ondanks beweringen van westerse media en politici, acht jaar gewacht met ingrijpen en geprobeerd te onderhandelen via de MINSK-besprekingen. Er heeft tussen 2014 (de westerse staatsgreep) en de SMO dan ook geen Russische interventie in de Donbass plaatsgevonden.

Europa en de VS proberen Rusland al jaren Rusland te omcrikelen, met de uitbreiding van de NAVO en, meer recentelijk, door alle omliggende landen onder Amerikaanse invloed te brengen, zoals Armenië en Georgië.
