Never lower your sights to an elevation that can be attained with a minimal or moderate amount of effort.
Your target should be immensely difficult to strike, requiring a life of service, consistency and discipline.
The day in the photo was one of the more meaningful of my life, almost 2 years ago.
Despite its importance for me - it only marks the middle of the road between a beginner and a black belt…
And from there, the beginning of yet another journey toward excellence.
Going into this weekend’s competition, I’ve been thinking a lot about why I’ve kept up my martial arts practice even though it is largely painful, exhausting, and injurious to the body especially as I get close to my 40’s.
It all comes down to the need for a lifestyle of devotion.
Jiu Jitsu is one aspect of my “Bushido,” which, for lack of Western synonym, refers to an entire Way of being, ruled by specific principles and loyalty to an ideal.
This ideal becomes the “master” worth serving with one’s entire life.

Different work schedules, injuries, kids wanting to go get free candy…it all made for light mats last night, but from VA to CA, we still got our training in.

Matthias arrives back home tomorrow as we gear up for an epic week of training with visitors of every belt level converging on the temple for Friday night’s Circle of Honor.
Hope you all had a terrific night on or off the mats.
I’ll be sure to post lots of videos this weekend so you guys can see what we’re up to.

Great morning on the mats.
Our Wednesday am group had a beginner today.
What was the first technique/submission you ever learned?
Mine was the standard butterfly sweep with an over/under (so we drilled that today)
I still use this sweep every single day.
My first submission was a triangle choke.
While I got away from using these the past year or so, I’ve been finding my way back to them this last month.

The transfer of knowledge and technique happens during AND after your training.

Good vibe on the mats.
Lots of hoodies under the gis as temps are in the teens and low twenties for morning class now.
It can be hard to get out of bed when it’s dark and cold outside…but you do it, because what does the alternative offer you?
A sense of accomplishment, better health both of mind and body, being harder to kill…traded away for a few moments of comfort.
That’s not a good bargain.
Stop ripping yourself off.
