Microsoft "asking" you to buy a 365 subnoscription after every update with the only options being "remind me in X days" or "take my money" is only materially worse than apple deciding that I'm not allowed to use macOS after the latest update without A) being connected to the internet, and B) setting up their stupid BETA applet with the only other option being "later".

Neither of these companies are your friend. Neither deserves your respect, nor loyalty. If you have a use for their product or services, so beit. But don't fall for the lie that they are the only options. The year of the Linux desktop might be a meme, but I swear on God almost none of my family would even notice if I gave them a laptop with fedora or mint.

There are absolutely some specific cases where industry specific software is only available on some specific platform. But those cases are shrinking by the day, and I'd argue the majority of cases are at a point where it's better to learn and support the alternatives as ...
