Awakened : 193

It’s hard to come by
a thoroughbred of a man.
It’s simply not true
that he’s born everywhere.

Wherever he’s born, an enlightened one,
the family prospers, is happy.

A blessing: the arising of Awakened Ones.

A blessing:the teaching of true Dhamma.

A blessing: the concord of the Sangha.

The austerity of those in concord is a blessing.

Monks, if while sitting, a thought of sense desire or ill will or harmfulness arises in a monk, and if he allows it to stay and does not reject it, does not quickly abandon it, does not get rid of it, and does not bring it to an end, that monk— lacking in energy and unafraid of wrongdoing—is often and continually called lazy and weak in his effort.

Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, a monk who has evil thoughts related to sense pleasures is following a wrong path. Infatuated with delusory things, he is not capable of achieving supreme enlightenment.

Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, a monk who overcomes evil thoughts and delights in the stilling of thoughts is capable of achieving supreme enlightenment.

If you worship those worthy of worship,
–Awakened Ones or their disciples–
who’ve transcended objectification, crossed over lamentation & grief,
who are unendangered, fearless, unbound:
there’s no measure for reckoning
that your merit’s ‘this much.’

Dhammapada XV : Happy

Happy : 197-200
How very happily we live,
free from hostility
among those who are hostile.
Among hostile people,
free from hostility we dwell.
How very happily we live,
free from misery
among those who are miserable.
Among miserable people,
free from misery we dwell.
How very happily we live,
free from busyness
among those who are busy.
Among busy people,
free from busyness we dwell.
How very happily we live,
we who have nothing.
We will feed on rapture
like the Radiant gods.

"How should we act, Lord, respecting the body of the Tathagata?"

"Do not hinder yourselves, Ananda, to honor the body of the Tathagata... At a crossroads also a stupa should be raised for the Tathagata. And whosoever shall bring to that place garlands or incense or sandalpaste, or pay reverence, and whose mind becomes calm there — it will be to his well being and happiness for a long time."

Happy : 201

Winning gives birth to hostility.
Losing, one lies down in pain.
The calmed lie down with ease,
having set winning & losing aside.

Happy : 202-204

There’s no fire like passion,
no loss like anger,
no pain like the aggregates,
no ease other than peace.
Hunger: the foremost illness.
Fabrications: the foremost pain.
For one knowing this truth
as it has come to be,
Unbinding is the foremost ease.
Freedom from illness: the foremost good fortune.
Contentment: the foremost wealth.
Trust: the foremost kinship.
Unbinding: the foremost ease.

Drinking the nourishment, the flavor,
of seclusion & calm,
one is freed from evil, devoid of distress,
refreshed with the nourishment
of rapture in the Dhamma.

It’s good to see Noble Ones.
Happy their company–always.
Through not seeing fools
constantly, constantly one would be happy.

For, living with a fool,
one grieves a long time.
Painful is communion with fools,
as with an enemy–always.

Happy is communion
with the enlightened,
as with a gathering of kin.
So: the enlightened man–
discerning, learned,
enduring, dutiful, noble,
intelligent, a man of integrity:
follow him
–one of this sort–
as the moon, the path of the zodiac stars.

King Milinda asks:

"What is the benefit of building stupas and paying respect to them? The Buddha has passed away, so how can such acts bring merit?"

Nagasena replies:

"Great king, even though the Buddha has passed away, his relics remain as a focus of veneration. When people build stupas or offer respect to them, they create merit. Just as the fragrance of a flower spreads with the wind, the act of reverence brings joy and spiritual benefit to the devotees."

He further explains:

"The stupa is like a great rain cloud, bringing blessings and relief to those who seek it. By honoring the stupa, one honors the Buddha, his teachings, and the Sangha, cultivating wholesome qualities and a peaceful mind."

Dhammapada XVI : Dear Ones

Dear Ones : 209

Having applied himself
to what was not his own task,
and not having applied himself
to what was,
having disregarded the goal
to grasp at what he held dear,
he now envies those
who
kept after themselves,
took themselves
to task.

And further, monks, a monk, in going forward and back, applies clear comprehension; in looking straight on and looking away, he applies clear comprehension; in bending and in stretching, he applies clear comprehension; in wearing robes and carrying the bowl, he applies clear comprehension; in eating, drinking, chewing and savoring, he applies clear comprehension; in walking, in standing, in sitting, in falling asleep, in waking, in speaking and in keeping silence, he applies clear comprehension.

Thus he lives contemplating the body in the body...

Dear Ones : 210-211

Don’t ever–regardless–
be conjoined with what’s dear
or undear.
It’s painful
not to see what’s dear
or to see what’s not.
So don’t make anything dear,
for it’s dreadful to be far
from what’s dear.
No bonds are found
for those for whom
there’s neither dear
nor undear.

Those with close relationships have affection, following which this pain arises. Seeing this danger born of affection, live alone like a horned rhino.

When feelings for friends and loved ones are tied up in selfish love, you miss out on the goal. Seeing this peril in intimacy, live alone like a horned rhino.

As a spreading bamboo gets entangled, so does concern for partners and children. Like a bamboo shoot unobstructed, live alone like a horned rhino.

As a wild deer loose in the forest grazes wherever it wants, a smart person looking for freedom would live alone like a horned rhino.
