Just this is the path
–there is no other–
to purify vision. Follow it,
and that will be Mara’sbewilderment.

Following it, you put an end
to suffering & stress.
I have taught you this path
having known
–for your knowing–
the extraction of arrows.
It’s for you to strive
ardently.

Tathagatas simply
point out the way.
Those who practice,
absorbed in jhana:
from Mara’s bonds
they’ll be freed.

When you see with discernment,
‘All fabrications are inconstant’–
you grow disenchanted with stress.

This is the path to purity.

This is the path

When you see with discernment,
‘All phenomena are not-self’–
you grow disenchanted with stress.

This is the path

At the time for initiative
he takes no initiative.
Young, strong, but lethargic,
the resolves of his heart
exhausted, the lazy, lethargic one
loses the path to discernment.

“In the wilderness, at a tree’s root, or an empty hut, O mendicants, recollect the Buddha, and no fear will come to you.

If you can’t recollect the Buddha—the eldest in the world, the chief of men—then recollect the teaching, emancipating, well taught.

If you can’t recollect the teaching—emancipating, well taught—then recollect the Saṅgha, the supreme field of merit.

Thus recollecting the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha, mendicants, fear and terror and goosebumps will be no more.”

Guarded in speech,
well-restrained in mind,
you should do nothing unskillful
in body.

Purify these three courses of action.
Bring to fruition the path that seers have proclaimed.

From striving comes wisdom; from not, wisdom’s end.
Knowing these two courses
–to development, decline–
conduct yourself
so that wisdom will grow.

Buddha Abhidhamma
Ultimate Science

by
Dr. Mehm Tin Mon
B.Sc.Hons. (Ygn), M.Sc., Ph.D. (USA)
Professor of Chemistry (Rtd.)
Professor of Samatha Meditation

International Theravàda Buddha Missionary University, Yangon

Adviser to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Union of Myanmar

The prophecy that an able person would soon appear to contribute to the world of knowledge in the field of Buddhist Psycho-ethical-philosophy, which we commonly appreciate as Buddha Abhidhamma, has now come true.

The prophecy was made by my revered old teacher, Bhaddanta Nàrada Mahàthera (Aggamahàpandita) who was well-known as the original Patthàna Master. He made the prophecy in 1952 while I was studying Yamaka and Patthàna Treatises under his guidance. He assigned me and my colleague translator, Professor Thein Nyunt, to translate his writings on Abhidhamma. The task was never fully accomplished as I was occupied with teaching at the Pàli and Abhidhamma Department of the University of Yangon and later transferred to the International Institute of Advanced Buddhistic Studies at Kaba-Aye as Head of Research Department.

Thereupon my disappointed old teacher, Bhaddanta Nàrada Mahàthera, with full expectation, prophesied that pretty soon an able scholar will emerge to accomplish the noble task of presenting Abhidhamma in English to the world. So now appears a novel and authentic treatise ennoscriptd BUDDHA ABHIDHAMMA—Ultimate Science by Dr. Mehm Tin Mon.

Cut down the forest of desire,
not the forest of trees.
From the forest of desire
come danger & fear.
Having cut down this forest
& its underbrush, monks,
be deforested.
For as long as the least
bit of underbrush
of a man for women
is not cleared away,
the heart is fixated
like a suckling calf
on its mother.

Crush
your sense of self-allure
like an autumn lily
in the hand.

Nurture only the path to peace
–Unbinding–
as taught by the One Well Gone.

‘Here I’ll stay for the rains.
Here, for the summer & winter.’
So imagines the fool,
unaware of obstructions.
That drunk-on-his-sons-&-cattle man,
all tangled up in the mind:
death sweeps him away–
as a great flood,
a village asleep.

There are
no sons
to give shelter,
no father,
no family
for one seized by the Ender,
no shelter among kin.

Realizing
this force of reasoning,
the wise man, restrained by virtue,
Should make the path pure
–right away–
that goes all the way to Unbinding.

Dependent Origination and Emptiness
By Leigh Brasington
November 2021, 228 pp., free, eBook

Leigh Brasington, began meditating in 1985 and was a senior student of the Theravada teacher Ven. Ayya Khema (1923–1997). He regularly teaches retreats on the jhanas, dependent origination, and insight meditation, and is the author of Right Concentration: A Practical Guide to the Jhanas.

Dependent origination, writes Leigh Brasington in Dependent Origination and Emptiness, was the Buddha’s best attempt to describe what happened on the night of his enlightenment. But the great teacher’s list of twelve links, which the British scholar Caroline Rhys Davids called a “mysterious old rune,” can be confounding, to say the least.

Dependent origination is so much richer than a linear list that needs to be memorized, says Brasington, especially when you can grasp the holographic nature of everything in the universe happening based on everything else happening.

an abundance of ease,
the enlightened man
