Homage to the Seven Past Buddhas
Homage to Vipassi, possessed of vision & splendor.
Homage to Sikhi, sympathetic to all beings.
Homage to Vesabhu, cleansed, austere.
Homage to Kakusandha, crusher of Mara’s host.
Homage to Konagamana, the Brahman who lived the life perfected.
Homage to Kassapa, everywhere released.
Homage to Aṅgirasa, splendid son of the Sakyans,
who taught this Dhamma—the dispelling of all stress.
Those unbound in the world, who have seen things as they have come to be,
Great Ones of gentle speech, thoroughly mature:
Even they pay homage to Gotama, the benefit of human & heavenly beings,
consummate in knowledge & conduct, the Great One, thoroughly mature.
We revere the Buddha Gotama, consummate in knowledge & conduct.

rakkheyya nam surakkhitam
Tiuuam aññataram yàmam
pañijaggeyya paudito. 157.
BE VIGILANT
1. If one holds oneself 1 dear, one should protect oneself well. During every one of the three watches the wise man should keep vigil. 157.
Story
A royal couple was childless. The Buddha declared that their childlessness was due to their not having led a harmless and heedful life in a previous birth. Advising them to be vigilant, He uttered this verse.

The Buddha said this:
“Mendicants, if wanderers of other religions were to ask: ‘Reverends, all things have what as their root? What produces them? What is their origin? What is their meeting place? What is their chief? What is their ruler? What is their overseer? What is their core?’ You should answer them: ‘Reverends, all things are rooted in desire. They are produced by application of mind. Contact is their origin. Feeling is their meeting place. Immersion is their chief. Mindfulness is their ruler. Wisdom is their overseer. Freedom is their core.’ When questioned by wanderers of other religions, that’s how you should answer them.”

The deliverance of the heart through mettā made known by the Buddha is a simple meditation, which even a child can practice. A child yet unfamiliar with the conventional names of directions could radiate the six directions with mettā as ‘in front’ and ‘behind’, ‘to the left’ and ‘to the right’ and ‘above’ and ‘below’, or else simpler still, as ‘above, below and around’ (‘uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañcā’). The Buddha’s advice is that all men, women and children should practice this Deliverance of the Heart through universal love.

ADVISERS SHOULD SET THE EXAMPLE FIRST
2. Let one first establish oneself in what is proper, and then instruct others. Such a wise man will not be defiled. 2 158.
Story
A greedy monk who was a good preacher went from monastery to monastery, preaching the Dhamma and greedily gathering the gifts offered to him. One day two young monks could not divide between themselves two robes and a costly blanket. This greedy preacher settled the dispute by giving a robe to either of them and himself taking the blanket. The matter was reported to the Buddha. Thereupon the Buddha spoke on the desirability of the advisers themselves setting the example first.
