Rain on the Nile
By Ajahn Amaro
When Silent Rain was first compiled, back in 1993, part of the idea of producing such a varied collection of material – talks, poems, travelogues and artwork – was that it would then provide an easy source for smaller offprints over the years. Things, however, rarely turn out as predicted by foresight and thus, up until now, no smaller booklets had been spawned from it.
This present book, Rain on the Nile, is something of a remedy for that, being both an outcome of that original intention as well as an arena for the offering up of some more recent material – to wit, the travelogue of a journey to Egypt made in December of 2006. In truth, without there having been plans to reprint some of the talks from Silent Rain, the Egyptian diary would never have been written.

Dhammanussati Bhavana, recollection of the qualities of the Dhamma
“Mahanama, when a noble disciple has reached the fruit and understood the instructions they frequently practice this kind of meditation.
...... A noble disciple recollects the teaching: ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha (Svakkhato) —apparent in the present life (Sanditthiko), immediately effective (Akaliko), inviting inspection (Ehipassiko), relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves (Opanayiko).’ When a noble disciple recollects the teaching their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. … This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. They’ve entered the stream of the teaching and develop the recollection of the teaching.

THE WISE SEEK AN ESCAPE FROM THIS WORLD
9. Swans wing along on the path of the sun. (Men) go through air by psychic powers, 9 The wise are led away from the world, 10 having conquered Màra and his host. 11 175.
Story
Some monks came to see the Buddha and, hearing the Dhamma attained Arahantship with psychic powers. Later, they departed flying through the air. The Venerable Ananda, who had seen them coming, noticed their absence and inquired of the Buddha where they had gone. Just at that moment some swans flew through the air. Then the Buddha remarked that Arahants, who possess psychic powers, go through the air like swans.

Kāyena vācā cittena, pamādena mayā kataṁ

Kāyena vācā cittena, pamādena mayā kataṁ
Accayaṁ khama me saṅgha, puññak-kettaṁ anuttara.
If, due to negligence, I have done some wrong, by body, speech, or mind,
Forgive me of that offense, O Bhante, perfect One of vast wisdom.
If, due to negligence, I have done some wrong, by body, speech, or mind,
Forgive me of that offense, O Dhamma, visible and unaffected by time.
If, due to negligence, I have done some wrong, by body, speech, or mind,
Forgive me of that offense, O Sangha, supreme field of merit.
