Bodhinyana
by Venerable Ajahn Chah
Most of the talks in this collection were originally taken from old cassette tape recordings of Venerable Ajahn Chah, some in Thai and some in the North-Eastern Dialect, most recorded on poor quality equipment under less than optimum conditions. This presented some difficulty in the work of translation, which was overcome by occasionally omitting very unclear passages and at other times asking for advice from other listeners more familiar with those languages.
As regards the translations, the various translators have tried to be as exact as possible with the content of the teachings but have omitted much of the repetition inevitably arising in oral instruction. Pali words absorbed into the Thai language have, in the course of time, acquired additional meanings: e.g., the Thai “arome” refers to the Pali “ ¯ aramman ¯ . a” – sense object or mental impression, but its common meaning is “mood” or “emotion”. The Venerable Ajahn uses these words in both ways and we have translated accordingly.

Hard
is the life gone forth,
hard to delight in.
Hard
is the miserable
householder’s life.
It’s painful
to stay with dissonant people,
painful to travel the road.
So be
neither traveler
nor pained.

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Savatthi in Jeta’s Grove, Anathapiṇḍika’s Park. Then, when the night had advanced, a certain devatā of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jeta’s Grove, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side. Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“There is no affection like that for a son,
No wealth equal to cattle,
There is no light like the sun,
Among the waters the ocean is supreme.”
The Blessed One:
“There is no affection like that for oneself,
No wealth equal to grain,
There is no light like wisdom,
Among the waters the rain is supreme.”

AN INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM
Teachings, History and Practices
second edition
PETER HARVEY
In this new edition of the bestselling Introduction to Buddhism, Peter Harvey provides a comprehensive introduction to the development of the Buddhist tradition in both Asia and the West. Extensively revised and fully updated, this new edition draws on recent scholarship in the field, and explores the tensions and continuities between the different forms of Buddhism. Harvey critiques and corrects some common misconceptions and mistranslations, and discusses key concepts that have often been over-simplified and over-generalized.
The volume includes detailed references to noscriptures and secondary literature, an updated bibliography and a section on web resources.
Key terms are given in Pali and Sanskrit, and Tibetan words are transliterated in the most easily pronounceable form. This truly accessible account is an ideal coursebook for students of religion, Asian philosophy and Asian studies, and is also a useful reference for readers wanting an overview of Buddhism and its beliefs.
peter harvey is Emeritus Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Sunderland. He is the author of An Introduction to Buddhist Ethics: Foundations, Values and Issues (Cambridge, 2000) and The Selfless Mind: Personality, Consciousness and Nirvana in Early Buddhism (Curzon, 1995). He is editor of the Buddhist Studies Review and one of the two founders of the UK Association for Buddhist Studies.

All You Need Is Kindfulness
A Collection of Ajahn Brahm Quotes
The 63 quotes from Ajahn Brahm's teachings in this collection have been gathered from various talks delivered between 2009 and 2013. The teachings were either given to the lay people at Nollamara Centre and Jhana Grove Meditation Retreat Centre or to monastics at Bodhinyana Monastery and overseas in Sri Lanka. The background photos have been taken over the last seven years in Germany, New Zealand, Ladakh (North India), Australia, Switzerland, England and the Czech Republic.
To give this work a bit of structure, the sayings have loosely been put under the three headings of Sīla, Samādhi and Pañña. These are respectively, the Pali terms for Virtue, Meditation and Wisdom, which constitute the basic structure of the Buddhist path. These terms are explained briefly at the beginning of each section.
May this collection of quotes inspire you to be kind, calm and wise!

When among friends, whether staying in place or going on a journey, you’re always on call. Looking for the uncoveted freedom, live alone like a horned rhino.
Among friends you have fun and games, and for children you are full of love. Though loathe to depart from those you hold dear, live alone like a horned rhino.
They befriend you and serve you for their own sake; these days it’s hard to find friends
lacking ulterior motive.
Impure folk cleverly profit themselves—live alone like a horned rhino.
Clearly we praise the blessing of a friend, it’s good to be with friends your equal or better. but failing to find them, eating blamelessly, live alone like a horned rhino.
Partial excepts from Snp 1.3 : Khaggavisāṇasutta

Four things befall the heedless man
who lies down with the wife of another:
a wealth of demerit;
a lack of good sleep;
third, censure;
fourth, hell.
A wealth of demerit, an evil destination,
& the brief delight of a fearful man with a
fearful woman,
& the king inflicts a harsh punishment.
So
no man should lie down
with the wife of another.

Just as sharp-bladed grass,
if wrongly held,
wounds the very hand that holds it–
the contemplative life, if wrongly grasped,
drags you down to hell.
Any slack act, or defiled observance,
or fraudulent life of chastity bears no great fruit.
If something’s to be done,
then work at it firmly,
for a slack going-forth
kicks up all the more dust.
It’s better to leave a misdeed undone.
A misdeed burns you afterward.
Better that a good deed be done
that, after you’ve done it,
won’t make you burn.
