GUIDE TO TIPITAKA
compiled by U Ko Lay

It is a great privilege for me to have been entrusted with the task of compiling this 'Guide to Tipitaka'. So far as it is known, there is not a single work that deals, in outline, with the whole of Tipitaka. It is sincerely hoped that this compilation will be found useful and handy by the general reader who wishes to be provided with a bird's eye view of the vast and magnificent canonical scenery which represents all that the Buddha (and some of his disciples) had taught and all that has been treasured in the Tipitaka.

In compiling this work, the Pali Texts as approved by the Sixth International Buddhist Synod together with their Burmese translations have been closely adhered to. Acknowledgements are due to Dagon U San Ngwe and U Myo Myint who provided notes for some of the chapters. Additional information and facts were gathered from various other sources. The following complete set of 'Questions and Answers' recorded at the Sixth International Buddhist Synod proved to be a mine of information on the contents of the Tipitaka.

GOOD, EVIL AND BEYOND
KAMMA IN THE BUDDHA’S TEACHING
by Bhikkhu P. A. Payutto
translated by Bruce Evans

The work presented here is based on a single chapter from

Buddhadhamma, by Venerable P. A. Payutto. Buddhadhamma is perhaps the author’s most formal and ambitious book to date, a volume of over one thousand pages dealing with the whole of the Buddha’s teaching. Although the work is scholarly in approach, it renders the Buddhist themes so often misunderstood or considered beyond the scope of the ordinary layman more approachable in practical terms.

The venerable author is one of the foremost Buddhist scholars in Thailand today. His vast output of material ranges from simple explanations of basic Buddhist themes to more substantial Dhamma teachings of a commentarial nature (such as Buddhadhamma) and social analyses from a Buddhist perspective (such as Buddhist Economics). Venerable Payutto is unusually gifted in this regard, having had experience of both Eastern and Western cultures in the course of his scholastic and teaching careers. This, combined with an inquiring mind, exhaustive research, and an intuitive understanding of rare scope, gives the venerable author an outstanding position from which to present the Buddha’s teaching.

Gifts He Left Behind
The Dhamma Legacy of Ajaan Dune Atulo
compiled by Phra Bodhinandamuni
translated from the Thai by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Many people have asked for Luang Pu's Dhamma talks, out of a desire to read them or listen to them, and I have to confess frankly that Luang Pu's Dhamma talks are extremely rare. This is because he never gave any formal sermons or discoursed at any great length. He simply taught meditation, admonished his students, answered questions, or discussed the Dhamma with other elder monks. He would speak in a way that was brief, careful, and to the point. In addition, he never gave sermons at formal ceremonies.

So in response to the desire and interest that many people have shown in Luang Pu's Dhamma, I have compiled this book of his short teachings — pure truths at the highest level, lessons and admonishments he gave his students, answers to questions, and passages from the Buddha's words in the Canon that he always liked to quote. Because I lived for a long time with him, to the end of his days, I have gathered these passages from memory or from notes in my journal. I have also included the events, locations, and people who were involved, to help make the passages easier to understand and more inviting to read.

Buddhanussati, one of the four protective meditation, is recollections of the qualities of the Buddha, namely, araham (the perfect one who has eliminated all the defilements, or someone who has reached the state of great purity and perfection), Sammasambuddho (fully enlightened), Vijjacarana-sampanno (impeccable in conduct and understanding), Sugato (well farer), Lokavidu (the knower of the worlds), Anuttaro purisadamma-sarathi (who is unrivalled in taming those who are untamed), Sattha deva-manussanam (teacher of gods and humans), buddho (awake) and bhagava (the Blessed One).
