a theory of mine is that social media has completely broken the mind of Gen Z and millennials when it comes to work
their whole lives they have been told to pursue college, work really hard at their 9-5 job, go above and beyond for their boss, then save some income to hopefully purchase a home and family one day
all the people who followed this path are now watching their savings crumble away due to inflation. homeownership feels out of reach like never before
then they turn over and look at the 21 year olds making millions of dollars posting content on YouTube and TikTok. they are able to live with freedom, not beholden to a corporation, while also getting paid enough to afford everything they want
people see this and start questioning themselves. money doesn’t feel real in an economy where there is so much bifurcation between the have and have nots
the point of a job becomes meaningless. you fail to find purpose in your life anymore. and while these millionaires are the outliers, their content is the one that shows up in your feed over and over again
it is truly detrimental to society and i’m not sure anyone has a real solution to fix it

Honestly the key is being able to find your own path and realizing that the way that it used to be done doesn't work in this day and age. You can't just "save up" it doesn't mean anything unless you are saving faster than inflation which for most zoomers isn't happening. You have to be willing to do weird ass shit to make it work and you can't just live like its pre 08-09 because its just not.
The things we've done to thrive are just things that make sense when viewed in a vacuum, if you compare yourself to the lifestyles of the people around you ( funded by credit) you will always loose. I'm 24, have three kids, and have been working since 17 when I ran away.
We had our kids at home unassisted BECAUSE WE ARE IN A GREAT DEPRESSION. We use washable diapers instead of luxury disposables BECAUSE WE ARE IN A GREAT DEPRESSION. We buy whatever is on sale/ in season BECAUSE WE ARE IN A GREAT DEPRESSION. Biggest tip WE ARENT LEGALLY MARRIED because that makes it so on paper my wife is a single mother of three with no income but I can still claim her on my insurance and taxes (see civil union) BUT they can't go after me for her bills.
The only child we've had in the hospital was our second because he was late and had to be induced, and you best believe I didn't pay any of that bill and they can't fucking make me pay that bill because she signed the treatment paper not me. There are ways to save and to fuck the system here but you have to be willing to look like a weirdo and act like we are in the situation that we are ACTUALLY in.
The main issue is that people are still living like we are in the good years and are expecting to be able to buy luxuries like back then but we fucking aren't. Credit is enabling people to not have to face the fact that shit is fucked and its softening the blow of the fact that we are in a depression to the point where most people dont even realize we are in a depression or haven't internalized it.
My biggest tip to fellow zoomers would be start acting like we are living in a economic depression because we are. Dont overuse credit and if you do dont use it to buy amusements use it to buy assets. Dont be worried about what people think about your lifestyle because tbch it doesn't fucking matter. Best case scenario maybe your parents see what you're doing and get the "oh shit wait things are fucked for my kids" epiphany, worst care people think you are weird but in this day and age what's normal? And who the fuck cares? Just enjoy your life in your means.
Buy few things but better things. Eat less but better. Drink less but better. Dont let bullshit you dont need drag you down as a debt slave.

Traded 3 wooden chairs for a lawnmower that's needs a 16 dollar carburetor and a 15 dollar debris shield. Gonna clean it up and sell it for $150 come spring.
I have 2 lawnmowers, 2 pressure washers, and 2 weedeaters in the inventory for spring so far. Working on getting a john deer riding lawnmower this weekend too.
