Hereditary Heathenism:
The Anglo-Virginians (early North American British settlers) conflated White & Christian, and Nonwhite & Heathen; often simply referring to Whites as Christians and Nonwhites as Heathens, regardless of actual religion. This conflation continued well after until the secularisation of the United States.

The Anglo-Virginians concluded that the non-Christianity of both Injuns and Negros was immutable (unchangeable) and heritable; while the non-Christianity of any White was mutable (changeable) and not heritable. Even Christian nonwhites would still be viewed as heathens.

The result of this view of Hereditary Heathenism was a pseudo one drop purity standard for Whites. As nonwhites are permanently heathens incapable of Christianity, as well as all their descendants; and a single nonwhite ancestor meant you were also incapable of being Christian.

This is identical to contemporary Christian views on the incapacity of fauna to be Christians: which is suitable as nonwhites are fauna.
