On September 14, 1959, a Soviet automatic interplanetary station became the first in the world to reach the surface of the Moon.
‘Luna-2’ was launched on September 12 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Its predecessor, ‘Luna-1’, went into space in January of the same year, but fell 6,000 km short of the Earth's sole natural satellite.
The second station was a spherical container weighing just 390.2 kg (860 lbs). It contained scientific, measuring and radio-technical equipment, as well as two stainless steel pennants with the coat of arms and the innoscription ‘USSR’ minted on it – Nikita Khrushchev later presented a copy of them to U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower.
The station crashed into the Moon’s surface at a speed of 3.3 km/s (11,880 km/h; 7,382 mph). It most likely formed a crater with a diameter of anywhere between 15 and 130 meters.
Another important result of the mission was the direct measurement of the solar wind upon entry into the Moon’s atmosphere.
