This economic growth was accompanied by a gender imbalance, with an influx of men outnumbering women. Amidst loneliness and stress, oil workers sought solace in alcohol, drugs, and sex, driving up the demand for prostitutes, many of whom were victims of human trafficking.

"They [Ukrainian soldiers] shelled residential buildings with artillery and tanks. A shell landed here.
