Costa Rica has outlawed recreational hunting, solidifying its role as a worldwide leader in animal protection and a safe haven for the remarkable 5% of global biodiversity it hosts.

Home to an astonishing proportion of Earth's plant and animal species, Costa Rica stands as one of the planet's most vital biodiversity hotspots. Yet this extraordinary natural heritage faces ongoing threats from human activities—including unsustainable wildlife tourism, illegal wildlife trade, domestic animal neglect, and organized animal fighting.

As encounters between people and wildlife grow more frequent, the country's fragile ecosystems require proactive safeguards to protect their most vulnerable residents.

Costa Rica has responded with groundbreaking animal welfare laws that reflect a deep national commitment to conservation. Building on its landmark 2012 nationwide ban on sport and trophy hunting, the country introduced stringent anti-trafficking measures in 2017 to combat poaching and biodiversity loss. By imposing mandatory prison sentences for animal cruelty and creating a national registry of offenders, Costa Rica demonstrates that effective conservation demands strong legal enforcement alongside widespread societal resolve to safeguard all living beings within its borders.

Steep-sided irrigation canals have become inadvertent death traps for wildlife worldwide, silently contributing to significant biodiversity loss.

These engineered waterways, essential for agriculture, often feature smooth concrete walls and slippery linings that make escape impossible for animals seeking water. In Argentina's Gran Chaco—a highly biodiverse dry forest region—researchers documented 207 drowned terrestrial vertebrates from 35 species along a single 250-km canal over just six months in 2023-2024. Among the victims were 38 vulnerable giant anteaters, along with tortoises, peccaries, and deer.

This hidden crisis extends globally, with documented wildlife drownings in canals reported across countries including Spain (hundreds of mammals over multi-year studies), Mexico, the United States (e.g., deer in systems like the All-American Canal), Brazil (maned wolves and armadillos in agribusiness channels), and others. In arid and semiarid zones, where animals are drawn to these artificial water sources, the impacts are particularly severe, exacerbating an underrecognized process of "defaunation."

Conservation experts urge immediate action through infrastructure adaptations that balance agricultural needs with wildlife protection. Effective solutions include installing escape ramps or ladders, adding textured surfaces for grip, covering sections of canals, or redesigning walls with gentler slopes—measures proven in some regions to allow trapped animals safe exit without compromising water flow.

Forget traditional K-9 units— one Brazilian prison has turned to an unlikely squad of feathered guards.

At the São Pedro de Alcântara penitentiary in Santa Catarina state, authorities have deployed a flock of geese as an innovative early-warning system to thwart escape attempts.

Nicknamed “geese agents,” these birds patrol the grassy buffer zone between the inner and outer perimeter fences. Their job is simple yet effective: detect any unusual activity and raise the alarm.

Prison director Marcos Roberto de Souza notes that while the facility already relies on electronic monitoring and human guards, the geese add a highly sensitive final layer of security. The flock, led by a goose called Piu-Piu, instinctively reacts to intruders with loud honking thanks to their strong territorial behavior.

The switch from guard dogs to geese was motivated by cost savings and practical advantages. Feeding and caring for geese is far cheaper than maintaining trained canines, and the prison’s quiet rural setting amplifies the birds’ natural vigilance. In the near-silence of day and night, even minor disturbances trigger immediate, unmistakable alerts that prompt rapid response from staff.

This clever, low-cost solution demonstrates how harnessing animals’ innate instincts can provide reliable, low-tech security—proving that nature sometimes outperforms expensive technology.

Bitcoin Is Flashing Two Bullish Signals

- Bitcoin’s MACD has returned to levels last seen at the 2022 bear-market bottom. Bottom might be near.

- The current market structure is forming a clear bullish divergence on its MACD

If the traditional four-year cycle is indeed broken, 2026 could look very different.

US options market activity has never been higher:

Total options volume is on track to exceed an average of 60 million contracts per day in 2025 for the first time ever.

This would mark a +10 million contract increase YoY and a +30 million jump since 2020.

By comparison, before the pandemic, there was only one year where options volumes exceeded 20 million contracts per day on average, in 2018.

Meanwhile, 0DTE options volume is up to a record ~62% of the total so far in Q4 2025.

This percentage has tripled since Q2 2021.

Risk appetite is surging at a record pace.
