Either the creators really believe in it, or it’s a really good rug.

How do you tell the difference?

You don’t. Probably.

Sufficiently good rugs often indestinguishable from the greats.

May be unrealistic to expect to get your hit rate to truly 100%.

All you can hope to do is get the EV -vs- hit-rate good enough to be strongly EV+ for your expected portfolio size.
