Archaeologists have uncovered a vast ancient civilization in the Ecuadorian Amazon near the Andes, dating back around 2,000 years. Using lidar technology, they revealed a network of interconnected cities linked by massive roads, some measuring 10 meters (33 feet) wide and extending up to 20 kilometers (12 miles). These settlements, home to at least 10,000 people from the Upano culture (500 BC–600 AD), featured extensive farmland and advanced drainage systems. The discovery challenges long-held assumptions about Amazonian societies, proving that complex, densely populated civilizations thrived in the region long before European contact.
