A Ukranian female journalist was sentenced to 5 years in prison for publishing a video with the kidnapping of a man by military recruiters.
The woman, whose name is not mentioned, was detained by security forces in August last year in Chernivtsi.
It is claimed that she worked as a journalist and collaborated with two local publications. The reason for the arrest was the video she published on TikTok.
In the video noscriptd "saving a guy", military recruitment employees forcibly kidnapped a young man. The video was viewed by 8,600 TikTok users, after which the girl deleted the video.
Despite this, she was charged under Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, on the grounds that the video showed a regional assembly point - an object that is classified as military under martial law. According to the prosecution, the video revealed the location of the TCC.
The lawyer said that the purpose of the film was to cover a possible human rights violation during forced mobilization, and not to disclose military information. The defense indicated that the video did not contain coordinates, and the assembly point is a well-known place. Nevertheless, the court of first instance found the journalist guilty, imposing 5 years in prison and confiscation of the phone.
The Court of Appeal upheld the sentence, leaving it unchanged.
