Accounting flaw made markets panic for nothing —

Ahead of Trump’s new tariffs, U.S. businesses went on an import binge—stuffing warehouses with foreign goods before prices went up. Imports exploded 41.3% year-over-year (the biggest quarterly spike since 1972!), and since imports are subtracted in GDP accounting, that alone shaved about 5 percentage points off the number.

Take out the tariff-driven import surge, and U.S. GDP growth would be cruising at around 5%. That’s not recession—it’s roaring expansion.
