Haftar Declares EU Migration Delegation Unwelcome

Libya’s eastern government, led by General Khalifa Haftar, declared several European officials persona non grata, canceling a scheduled visit and accusing them of violating Libyan sovereignty and diplomatic protocol.

The expelled delegation included ministers from Greece (Thanos Plevris), Italy, Malta, and EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner. According to Benghazi authorities, their arrival at Benina Airport breached official procedures for diplomatic visits.

Haftar reportedly refused to meet them without representatives from the Benghazi-based government, which the EU does not officially recognize. The European planes left without holding any meetings.

A separate statement from the European Commission is expected.

Earlier, the EU delegation had met with Libya’s internationally recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli, where they pledged cooperation on migration. Minister Plevris emphasized the need to stop migrant flows from eastern Libya to Crete, which he said faces "enormous pressure."
