Pregnant Teenager Shot Over Road Rage August 24, 2025

Ponchatoula, Louisiana

On August 24, 2025, at around 9 a.m., 17-year-old Katelynn Strate, in her third trimester of pregnancy, was shot in the head during a road rage incident on a road in Tangipahoa Parish. Strate was a passenger in a car with two other people when the altercation occurred.

The suspect, Barry West, 54, engaged in brake-checking and tailgating with the other driver before firing a shot that struck Strate. The driver of her vehicle realized what happened and immediately drove her to a hospital.

Strate’s baby was delivered prematurely at 27 weeks and is healthy, currently in the NICU. Strate is expected to be taken off life support on August 25, 2025, with her family asking for help covering funeral costs.

West was arrested and charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder, one count of illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice.
