According to the U.S. president, from the nation’s founding until the 1960s, government architecture in the style of Ancient Greece and Rome “inspired people and encouraged civic virtue,” while the modernist and brutalist buildings that followed appeared “unappealing” to many Americans.
A return to the ideals of Antiquity, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and their 19th- and 20th-century followers, the order states, will visually link the modern state to the roots of ancient democracy.
The document does not ban other styles, but if an alternative design is chosen, it must “command respect from the general public and visually embody the dignity, enterprise, vigor, and stability of America’s system of self-government.”
