Tragedy in Lisbon: 15 killed, 23 injured in funicular derailment

Rescuers spent several hours pulling victims from the wreckage after the Glória funicular, one of Lisbon's most iconic attractions, derailed last night.

The tragedy claimed the lives of 15 people, many of whom were tourists. Another 23 people were injured. Police report that five people are in hospital in serious condition.

A German man is reported to be among those who died, as his wife and three-year-old son were rescued by authorities, a police source has told local media.

Police say the death toll could rise further. The accident occurred when the traction cable snapped, causing the carriage to lose control, roll downhill, and crash into a building at high speed.

The Glória funicular, built in 1885, is one of the city's oldest. It can carry more than 40 passengers and is both a national monument and a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.
