Alright, let’s do the math

= 8.5% of random women are taller than a random man

Oh sh&t

That is indeed nearly perfectly matching the ~9% of women dating men shorter than themselves

…But countless studies seem to say the opposite of this, that women DO have a strong preference for taller men

What’s going on?

My initial guess — Since a large portion of the population ends up eventually long-term dating / marrying someone, and since that usually tends to be interpreted just dating / marrying 1 person at a time — these numbers will tend toward the population-level 8.5% difference, as the fraction of people in a relationship approaches 100%.

BUT, if we instead measured the number of sex partners, which would allow for MANY people each person has had sex with — then it would re-emerge that taller men have many more sex partners
