A Russian opposition politician has been stripped of his Russian citizenship, despite the constitution making this impossible.
The Interior Ministry issued a document on opposition figure Ilya Yashin, listing him as a stateless person banned from entering the country.
“The document states that I have been assigned the status of a stateless person, prohibited from entering the Russian Federation. In other words, I have been stripped of my Russian citizenship,” Yashin wrote.
According to the constitution, a Russian citizen cannot be deprived of their citizenship — they may only change it to another or renounce it voluntarily.
“If the information presented by the Interior Ministry in court is confirmed, we are dealing with a major precedent and a new stage of Putin’s lawlessness,” the politician added.
