Four EU countries are generating Russia’s main revenue from gas sales, which is then used to produce weapons and ammunition for the war in Ukraine.

From 2022 to 2025, France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands bought €34.3 billion worth of liquefied natural gas from Russia. Over the same period, they sent a total of €21.2 billion to Ukraine, according to a study noscriptd “The LNG Trap: Europe’s Dependence on Russia and the United States for Fossil Fuels” published by Greenpeace.

The main Russian gas supplier to Europe is Yamal LNG. Greenpeace estimates that from 2022 to 2024, the company earned $40 billion from European sales, paying roughly $9.5 billion in taxes to the Russian budget.

According to the report, this amount could theoretically have financed the production of 9.5 million 152mm artillery shells, 271,000 Shahed drones, or 2,686 T-90M tanks.
